This article is for candidates who are unsure when candidates should take STEP, and whether a UCAS number is required.
Do I need a UCAS ID for STEP?
In theory it is fine for you to take STEP without a UCAS ID. This is not a mandatory field when you are entered for the test.
However, the reason most candidates do have UCAS IDs when they take STEP is because STEP candidates are usually already in the UCAS (University application) process.
When should I take STEP?
Most STEP candidates have already received offers from certain courses at the University of Cambridge or the University of Warwick. The courses requiring STEP can be viewed here.
Candidates are normally requested by the relevant university to sit STEP as a post-interview test. For those candidates, the test is 'connected' to the UCAS application so we issue the result to the relevant university/course on their behalf.
Can I take STEP without a UCAS application, or a year early?
Although there is nothing stopping candidates from taking STEP prior to submitting a UCAS application, we would not encourage students to take the test in the years before it is needed without checking with the intended university choices. This is because the universities may not take a previous year's result into consideration.
Ultimately it is at the university's discretion whether they would accept a result from a previous year: so we'd recommend that the candidate contacts their chosen university directly to clarify this.
How can I register for STEP without a UCAS ID?
As a UCAS ID is not a mandatory field for the centre, if the university in question has agreed to accept the result, the candidate can register for the test in the normal way, just without a UCAS ID.
How do universities get my results if I don't have a UCAS application?
As a reminder, most STEP candidates have already received offers from certain courses at the University of Cambridge or the University of Warwick. For those candidates, the test is 'connected' to the UCAS application so we issue the result to the relevant university/course on their behalf if the UCAS ID is included.
If a candidate wants to take STEP without a current UCAS application, the candidate will be responsible for providing the result to the relevant university as we will be unable to do this on their behalf.
